It’s tough to miss the banners welcoming all people to the University United Methodist Church in Syracuse.

What You Need To Know

  • The Black Lives Matter signs have been vandalized for the fourth time at the University United Methodist Church

  • The pastor says a sign was torn down and eggs were thrown at the church

  • She says they'll keep displaying the banners, hoping people will eventually understand the message

“We love everybody,” said Pastor Alicia Wood. “It’s an outwardly symbol of what you’ll find inside.”

However, Wood wishes everyone would embrace the signs, rather than tear them down.

“For the fourth time, our Black Lives Matter banners have been vandalized,” said Wood. “At first, they were just sharpied and Tuesday morning, we discovered that Monday night someone tried to rip that down and egged both of the banners.”

Wood says the damage is happening to other churches, too.

She believes only a few individuals are to blame, but wants them to realize the purpose behind the banner.

“Everyone knows white lives matter,” said Wood. “We don’t have to say that. But right now, in this moment, and hopefully as long as it needs to be, we need to continue to say all Black lives matter.”

Despite some push back, Wood says they’ll keep showing their support.

“I just hope everyone takes a breath and really searches their heart as to why we are shouting Black lives matter,” said Wood.

Wood hopes now the congregation’s message is loud and clear.

She says all are welcome to UUMC. They’ll continue worship online and start having in-person services on September 13.
