Oswego was one of the few cities to officially mark the Fourth of July with a fireworks display as the coronavirus pandemic continues on, and Mayor Billy Barlow made it clear that he just wanted his residents to have a good time in a safe way.

Fireworks lit up the night sky in Oswego on Sunday for the city's annual celebration.

Onlookers were in awe at an opportunity to celebrate Independence Day.

Many came to early to catch the show as COVID-19 has kept people inside for months.

"I think it’s good for people to get out of the house and do something," said Rick Falanga who was propped outside on lawn chairs with his wife ready to enjoy the show.

Before the show started, people were social distancing 6 feet apart.

"I was slightly concerned with how many people would show up, but this doesn’t look anything like Harborfest, with jams of people so so far so good," said Falanga.

But as night fell, people were closer than expected, with some not wearing masks.

The city chose to have the display over the railroad pedestrian bridge and closing off streets due to safety concerns.

"We took a different approach and tried to get creative, and people understand why we did that," said Barlow.

The mayor says the city spent around $10,000 on the show.

"We spent a little extra money to try to make up for a lack of a parade this year," said Barlow.
