The fight to make limousines safer nationwide is one step closer to becoming a reality.

Three bills sponsored by Congressmen Paul Tonko and Antonio Delgado were part of an infrastructure package that passed the House Wednesday.

The package advances by a vote of 233-188.

Limo legislation passed at the state level earlier this year, but the bills introduced in Congress included reforms for the entire limo industry across the country.

They would give states the ability to impound and pull unsafe limos off the road.

Tonko says this could have played a vital role in the Schoharie crash where 20 people were killed in October of 2018.

Delgado sponsored the ‘End the Limo Loophole’ Act, which would reclassify any vehicle carrying nine or more people to fall under more strict regulations, currently reserved for vehicles carrying 15 or more people.

Right now, it’s designated at 15 or more — meaning most limos operate under less strict standards.

The full slate of reforms will now go to the U.S. Senate for a vote.
