One of the most anticipated weekends for baseball fans will have to wait another year due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Wednesday, the National Baseball Hall of Fame announced this year’s Induction Weekend was canceled after the Board of Directors unanimously decided to move the event.
"It's disappointing to not be able to have an induction ceremony in Cooperstown. We've become so accustomed to these tremendous events and celebrations of baseball and America's pastime,” said Baseball Hall of Fame Vice President of Communications & Education Jon Shestakofsky.
This year's class will instead be honored during next year's Hall of Fame weekend, alongside any new inductees who could be elected in the Class of 2021.
"I think it'll take on a little extra emphasis and the meaning of getting everyone back together and being able to put this event on,” said Shestakofsky.
The Class of 2020 includes Yankees legend Derek Jeter, one-time Utica Blue Sox star Larry Walker, Ted Simmons and Marvin Miller.
"We kept them in the loop in our conversations and wanted to hear from them as well to a man,” Shestakofsky said, “The three living electees, Derek Jeter, Ted Simmons and Larry Walker were all in complete agreement with this decision."
This summer, Cooperstown expected large crowds with Jeter's induction.
"Obviously Derek Jeter is universally beloved in the Bronx and fans in New York are a short drive from the City to Cooperstown,” says Shestakofsky.
But for now, baseball fans will have to look forward to next year's induction weekend, which will be July 23 to July 26,
"It's an exciting weekend, it's going to be a lot of fun. We know we have a great group of Hall of Famers that we will be celebrating, we could have more,” Shestakofsky said.
Next summer's ceremony will be the first to combine multiple classes since 1949.
