Upstate University Hospital is introducing a major advancement for COVID-19 testing.

Doctors say there are two versions of the test, both can give results within a day. In-house processing allows Upstate to save a lot of time.

Previously, the hospital sent tests to the Wadsworth Center in Albany, which could take more than three days. Now, some tests can give results in 45 minutes.

"We have a much lower number of those tests, this comes from a commercial partner. So we use it for very specific circumstances. So this is really a game changer for Upstate and how we care for our patients who are suspected of having COVID infections or those who are known to having COVID infections," said Chief of Infectious Diseases, Stephen Thomas.

The quicker turnaround also helps county officials.

"For them to be able to use their lab and turn around information in a day probably gives us another 24 to 36 hours to do our investigation," said County Executive, Ryan McMahon.

With a quicker turnaround, Upstate workers will be able to save vital resources as well.

"It allows us to burn less PPE everyday right? As you guys have seen on the news, the PPE supply chain is fickle at best right? So we really want to conserve as much PPE as possible," said Thomas.

Officials say tests will be used for inpatient and outpatient cases.
