As the national shortage of protective gear grows worse, local hospitals are asking for the community's help.

Upstate University Hospital is collecting personal protective equipment for its healthcare workers. They're desperately in need of N-95 masks, ear loop masks, and hand sanitizers.

Donations could be a big help, but Upstate Medical University Infectious Disease Division Chief Dr. Stephen Thomas says they must be approved first.

"We have a process by which there's a single point of entry to receive those requests,” Dr. Thomas said. “Then we have a vetting process. It has goes through our logistics and supply people and our environmental services people, and it has to go through our infection control and clinicians before we’re going to sign off."

Crouse Health is in need of all forms of protective equipment, including N-95 and surgical masks, safety goggles, gloves, and waterproof and non-waterproof gowns.

St. Joseph’s Health is asking local companies, doctors, dentists, and veterinarians who were forced to shut down their offices to consider donating. This includes masks, gowns, eyewear, face shields, thermometers, and hand sanitizer. All the items must be new or in the original packaging.
