The census is less than two months away and workers said one way they're making sure everyone is counted is by preventing scams.

Census partners said while seniors are the most susceptible to scams, everyone is vulnerable.

They say the best way to ensure you're protected is knowing all of your options, the census can be taken online, over the phone or on paper. Workers said phone calls from the census are usually only for verifying information.

But one red flag, regardless of the method, is the type of questions they ask.

"We will never ask you for your Social Security number. We will never ask you for bank account info we will never ask you to go to the ATM and withdraw money, we will never ask you for bank card information. We will never ask you for personally identifiable information," said Census Partnership Coordinator for Central and Western New York Amy Brombos.

They will ask for your name, age, birthdate and gender.

Representatives the Onondaga County Aging Office said they have programs in place to ensure seniors take the census. Since, it would impact their funding.

Census partners said if you have any suspicions to ask for the caller’s name and a callback number, then call the official census number, 1-800-923-8282.
