The man who killed a Binghamton University nursing student is appealing his sentence.
Orlando Tercero was sentenced to 30 years in a Nicaraguan jail for femicide. It's a crime that's defined as the intentional killing of a woman because she's a woman.
According to a Nicaraguan newspaper, Tercero wants his crime to be considered a homicide instead. That would lower his sentence to 15 years.
Spectrum News reached out to the Broome County District Attorney. He says the appeal is out of his jurisdiction but he did receive a courtesy letter explaining the situation.
