At the Onondaga County Clerk's building, incumbent Onondaga County District Attorney William Fitzpatrick was sworn in again Friday. He has been serving the county since 1992.
Now, that it's his eighth term after defeating two other candidates by a comfortable margin, Fitzpatrick says he feels this ceremony is special.
"I can't thank the voters enough for that [win],” said Fitzpatrick, “and I am going to promise them four more years of great service."
He says his years of service include introducing crime labs, increasing public safety, and making Onondaga County a leader in reform in comparison to other counties.
“I want to always make sure we are a cut above,” disclosed Fitzpatrick.
He said the county prides itself leading in criminal justice reform among the entire state.
"You want someone like me who is going to fight tenaciously for your child,” Fitzpatrick said.
For the DA, that includes the fight against bail reform, which he believes is coming January 1.
"We do not seek nominal bail in Onondaga County for well over a decade," said Fitzpatrick.
He said he wants to protect constituents from criminals who get released back on the street before their trial. Legislature Chairman David Knapp thinks goals such as criminal justice reform and opposing bail reform, and other policy items, earned Fitzpatrick the vote once more.
"For him to perform as well as he did,” said Knapp, “it shows that he really has the support of the community."
It's a community Fitzpatrick vowed to serve the same way now as he said he has for the past 28 years.
“What they [the community] expect from me is competence, fairness, effectiveness, and justice,” said Fitzpatrick.
