From life support to riding freely, 13-year-old Zyere Jackson is recovering after he was hit by a car in October near Lincoln Middle School in Syracuse.

"I expected Zyere to fight, but I didn't expect it to happen so fast," said Qitasha Jackson, Zyere's mom.

Zyere and his mother say they're thankful.

"I’m thankful because I'm alive,” said Zyere.

"I believed every moment of the way that he could pull through,” Qitasha added.

But now, he's longing for normalcy.

"He wants to go back to school,” said Qitasha. “He wants to hang out with his friends. He wants to play basketball. He wants to ride a bike."

That wish came true.

Zyere and his classmates were able to pick a bike at the third annual Law Enforcement and Community Immersion Program, which is part of the CNY Bike Giveaway.

"There's a little over 2,000 here on the floor,” said Jan Maloff, the CNY Bike Giveaway organizer. “We did give law enforcement over 200 vouchers for this evening's event."

Zyere had his eyes on the blue bike. Just two months after his accident, he's ready to ride, but not in this weather.

Qitasha says she's worried as Zyere prepares to pedal off on his own, but she also says it's a sign of growth.

"When he woke up he couldn't use his legs and his arms,” said Qitasha. “He could not do that. He couldn't aim a bike and ride it, and he can ride a bike and aim it. It means everything."

Proving that the sky's the limit.

"I hope he takes from it to understand accidents happen and you can't let that define anything to do with your life baby,” said Qitasha.

As Zyere travels toward triumph, Qitasha says he’s on a speedy recovery, but has problems with his sight and hearing. He’s currently in therapy, but hopes to return to Lincoln Middle School in January.

The CNY Bike Giveaway will be this Saturday at Fowler High School. It starts at 10 a.m., and it’s first-come first-serve.
