An actor from the 1946 classic film "It's a Wonderful Life" is making a movie about a historical figure from Oswego.

Jimmy Hawkins, who played little Tommy Bailey, will produce a movie about Dr. Mary Walker. Hawkins visited the Oswego County Historical Society for some research.

Clothing items, journals, and documents from Dr. Walker's life have been preserved. Walker was a surgeon during the Civil War and is the only woman to receive the Congressional Medal of Honor.

Hawkins said he heard her story at the Seneca Falls Festival.

"It's all because of 'It's a Wonderful Life,' " said Hawkins. "I mean, it's amazing how that movie keeps touching lives. That, you know, somebody up there topped me on the shoulder to say 'you're gonna do this.' "

The movie is still in its early stages, but Hawkins says it will premiere in Seneca Falls.
