Jack Frost’s return can mean frozen pipes, leaks and bursts if you’re not prepared. Luckily, there are a few easy steps you can take to keep your pipes protected during the winter chill, courtesy of Ryan Services in Rochester.

  1. Drain your hose, disconnect it and shut off the water

  2. Leave your faucet dripping
If you don’t want to hear the drip, put a sponge underneath it in the sink

  3. Buy a freeze sensor
It will keep track of the temperature in the basement and send a message to your phone if something goes wrong like your sump pump failing.

  4. Buy a frost-free hose bib
The pipe and shutoff valve are further inside the home where it’s warmer. It’s also at an angle that allows water to drain out so it doesn’t freeze.

FUN FACT: Did you know that hot water lines freeze faster than cold lines?
