Three Syracuse Police Officers are awarded the joint title of New York State Police Officer of the Year for their part in an incident that happened on February 4, 2018.

On South Salina Street new West Calthrop, a man was waving around a gun. When Lieutenant James Milana showed up in his car, but he was shot at before he got out.

Bullets struck the car and came close to hitting Lieutenant Milana in the head. He says in high intensity moment like that you don't have time to think, you just act.

"It happened so quickly, you handle it the way you would any other call,” Milana said. “You know that there is a threat, you know that there is a criminal that needs to be taken into custody and you respond accordingly.”

In 2017 the first Syracuse police officer received the same honor. Officer Kelsey J. Francemone was the first female sole recipient to win the award.
