You might have heard, maybe even saw or felt it last night if you were anywhere between Southern Jefferson County and Syracuse.
There was a loud boom, explosive sound around 5:15 p.m. Monday that had people wondering where it came from.
There wasn't a cloud in the sky when people heard the noise. Police and fire agencies and even the airport also wondered where it came from.
The American Meteor Society may have the answer.
Their website took in nearly a dozen reports of fireball sightings in New York State Monday. All of the reports came in around the same time.
Nancy Ladd, who lives in Mexico, didn't think the boom she heard came from the sky.
"I actually thought it was the neighbor next door," she said. "That his propane tank blew up. That's what I thought."
Sam Sampere, Lab Manager of the Physics Department at Syracuse University, said what she heard was probably a meteor.
"You seem to hear it instantly and you seem to hear it from all around you," he said.
One woman in Waterloo wrote that she saw a bright, fast streak with a flash of rainbow colors, disappear behind a fluffy white cloud.
Another person in Fulton said “it was like I was standing an inch away from the biggest firework possible being let off. It then continued but was decreasing in sound. This sounded like thunder off in the distance for about 15 seconds. It was so loud, my house shook. I thought the power plant 12 miles away from me blew up."
But Ladd didn't see anything, she just heard the boom. Sampere says that's because light travels faster than sound, so the boom happened half a minute after the meteor soared through the sky.
Right now there are no reports of any damage related to the sightings or the boom.
