A surprise that many police officers don't walk into, but it's one that Syracuse Police Officer Brandon Hanks scored because of his heartwarming challenge.

"It feels great,” said Hanks. “It's one of the more happier moments in my career, let alone my life."

Los Angeles Lakers guard Rajon Rondo donated 25 pairs of shoes to support Hanks’ basketball challenge, after a video of him playing in the community went viral.

"He's been my favorite point guards for a long time,” said Hanks. “So, when I found out about this, I almost dropped my phone."

The Rajon Rondo Foundation said in a statement quote: "We are always willing to provide support to people who are willing to use their time, talent and treasure to make this world a better place."

"It's really humbling and makes you more appreciative when there's someone out there, let alone thousands of miles away in LA and sees your efforts your trying to put in the community,” said Hanks.

Hanks has been playing one-on-one games throughout the city. If Hanks makes the first basket, his opponent has to 20 push-ups. But if Hanks loses, he owes the winner sneakers.

"The feedback I'm getting from the community is positive,” said Hanks. “And I think our community here in Syracuse needed that. We needed something like this to get us back on track."

Hanks says this is just the beginning and wants to take this challenge to another level, especially who he plays, since the shoes are adult sizes.

"I'm going to have to start playing some bigger and better talent now,” said Hanks. “So, I don't plan on losing, so if they have to collect dust for a little while, I'll let them do that."

So far, Hanks only made one trip to the shoe store.
