One person is in custody after a standoff in Oneida County

Just after noon on Friday, police responded to a residence on State Route 46 in the town of Verona. The report was for a suicidal individual in a barn behind the residence who was possibly armed.

The man, who was later identified as 35-year-old Justin Carter, fired several shots towards officers during the standoff. After several hours, Carter surrendered without incident.

"When we arrived on scene we had a number of shots coming from the barn towards the officers,” said State Police Public Information Officcer Jack Keller. “Right now we were able to get the wife out safely."

He was sent to Oneida County Jail for arraignment.

Carter has been charged with Attempted Murder of a Police Officer in the first-degree, Reckless Endangerment in the first-degree, Menacing a Police Officer, and Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the fourth-degree.
