Gov. Andrew Cuomo unveiled a model for what he should be a national template for gun control legislation in the wake of a pair of mass shootings last weekend in Ohio and Texas.
Cuomo in a radio interview and on CNN urged Democrats running for the party’s presidential nomination to adopt the proposals.
They include:
- Outlawing assault-style weapons and high-capacity magazines
- Creating a mental health database to prevent mentally ill people from obtaining a firearm
- Universal background checks
- A national red flag law to prevent those deemed to be a danger to themselves or others from obtaining a gun
“I’m asking all Democrats, Democrats who want to run for president and coming to the State of New York: just make it a simple, clear choice for the American people—the 'Make America Safer Pledge,'” Cuomo said on CNN.
“The Democrats have to frame the issue. People talk about, 'well is this a moment for change.' There is no moment for change. Leadership makes the moment.”
Cuomo in recent weeks has signed into several new gun control provisions, including a measure banning 3-D printed guns, preventing school districts from arming teachers and a law for the locked storage of guns in homes where kids are living.
He made a similiar call, urging national gun legislation, on Monday.
