Everyone gets a front row seat to weather. This week's show is extreme heat.

"Those heat index values of 100-to-110,” said National Grid Spokesperson Virginia Limmiatis. “It sounds awful and your body is not going to be the biggest fan."

However you choose to deal with it, there's always folks behind the scenes making sure everything runs smoothly. National Grid already has a plan of action, beginning with tracking the weather.

"With the extreme heat temperatures, it increases the usage of air conditioners,” said Limmiatis. “We're completely mindful of that fact. So what we do as an organization is we continue monitoring the system and we have daily calls with the NYISO."

While the heat plays out, extra crews will be on standby for the weekend.

"Certainly our customers are number one,” said Limmiatis. “The safety of our customers is incredibly important to National Grid. We just want to make sure by keeping a few crews at the ready. If there are any outages, we can certainly address them immediately."

To alleviate that problem, there are things you can do right at home.

"We certainly are looking to have our customers perhaps increase the temperature of their air conditioning unit,” said Limmiatis. “Going from 75 to about 78 is a saving of about 18-percent on your overall energy bill. So, just an increase of three degrees on your A/C really does help the system."

You can also, turn off pool pumps, close the blinds or shades and use a fan when available to beat the heat.
