The American Red Cross is asking the community to get involved in a nationwide effort to help save more lives.
The "Sound the Alarm" event is taking place from 7:45 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday at the New York State Fairgrounds.
Volunteers will install free smoke alarms in homes and raise money for life saving services.
"Seven lives a day are lost because of home fires," said Alan Turner, the American Red Cross Western and Central New York regional CEO. "So, testing that smoke alarm if you have one, and if you don't have one, getting one in there. And we're installing the smoke detectors that are 10-year battery life, so they don't have to worry about the batteries, they're in there. So, when and if the smoke detector does go off, it's working and they can get out safely."
This program already saved 21 lives in Western and Central New York.
