Veterans sacrifice a lot to help protect our nation, but many have a hard time returning to civilian life, struggling with mental health issues. Congressman Anthony Brindisi (NY-22) is spearing heading this issue through legislation.

"This law that we are trying to pass will give us more resources to our VA's,” said Brindisi, Wednesday at Post 1113, in Whitesboro.

The congressman announced his bipartisan legislation last week to the House of Representatives, mentioning the main problems is with the current Department of Veteran Affairs. He said there is a lack of staffing that needs to be increased and more early intervention needs to take place.

"Unfortunately what brings us here today is veteran suicide, 20 veterans die by suicide every day it is unacceptable,” said the congressman.

On Wednesday, dozens of veterans showed their concern for this topic, including army veteran Bill Hamelin.

"Suicide is something that a death that occurs that should not occur,” said Hamelin. “I also think that we should enroll the young veterans into the VA from their discharge point, I believe that will help."

Something lawmakers say is at the forefront of their agenda.

"I think that money to support our veterans is money well spent,” said Brindisi.
