A Cortland County man is sentenced for killing a two-year-old. Dorian Bohn will spend a minimum of 25 years behind bars for second-degree murder, first-degree manslaughter, and child endangerment.
Emotions ran high in the courtroom as the judge handed down the sentence. Kassidy Dains’ mother Krystal was shaken and is still looking for answers.
“This summer’s going to be her second birthday without her,” said Krystal.
Two-year-old Kassidy was killed last April by Dorian Bohn at their McGraw home. In court, Kassidy’s mother delivered her final statement, trying to hold back tears.
“I was reading it this morning and I was crying,” said Krystal. “I mean Kassidy this summer she’d be four years old. It’s hard to think about where she would be, what she’d be, what she’d be doing.”
Last month, a jury convicted Dorian Bohn for Kassidy's murder. Bohn was taking care of Kassidy when he says he heard her fall out of bed. He waited 90 minutes before calling for help.
Court records revealed the child had sustained numerous injuries.
“This is a particularly tragic case with a young child of almost three-years-old, having died at the hands of a caretaker," said Cortland County District Attorney Patrick Perfetti.
Krystal called Bohn a monster and a coward. In her victim statement, she asked him why? But she didn't get an answer, and like at trial, Bohn remained silent.
“’Do you think you’ll ever get that answer, why?’ I don’t,” said Krystal.
“Nothing can bring Kassidy back. I guess this is the next best thing. So, it's what the law allows and we’re gratified by the verdict,” said Perfetti.
Bohn could still appeal the jury’s conviction. But for Krystal, the pain is something that will stay with her family forever.
Bohn has 30 days to file an appeal.
