A woman was airlifted to the hospital after the vehicle she was driving was hit by another vehicle not long after she ran into a manure spreader.

According to New York State Police, officers responded around 7 a.m. Tuesday to an accident involving the large and heavy piece of farm equipment and two other vehicles on State Route 222 in Groton, Tompkins County.

An investigation found that 41-year-old Jill R. Ashley Williams was traveling east on Route 222 when she rear-ended a manure spreader pulled by a John Deere tractor belonging to the Fuller Family Dairy Groton Farm. Troopers said the tractor was operated by 23-year-old Walter Vasquez-Ramirez.

A few minutes later, police said 71-year-old Albert Perreault was also traveling east and didn’t see the crash. He then struck Williams’ vehicle and the tractor.

Williams was extricated from her vehicle by fire department officials and then transported by helicopter to Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse.

The driver of the tractor wasn’t injured.

State Route 222 was closed for over two hours for clean-up. The cause of the accidents appears to be unsafe speed and bright glare from the sun.

No tickets have been issued at this time.
