A Syracuse hospital is honoring the life a little boy who lost an 8-year battle with brain cancer.

Saint Jude Childen's Research Hospital created an award in honor of 10-year-old Colin Hayward-Toland. Before he passed away last year, he was able to fulfill his dream of becoming a police officer with the Ithaca Police Department.

The "Officer Hayward-Toland Award" was given out at the annual gala Saturday night. Hospital staff say they hope to carry out Colin's legacy for years to come.

"If his spirit can be recognized," said Colin's father, Ian Hayward. "We can take the spirit and honor what it represented— that giving back spirit. That spirit of never giving up and we can help another family. That's a way to endure and also give back and it's meaningful."

The President of Elder Choice, Aaron Harris was the recipient of the Office Colin Award.
