The man accused of killing his wife and a New York state trooper nearly two years ago has been found guilty of all counts.
Justin Walters was convicted Wednesday morning in Jefferson County Court of all 52 counts against him. The charges stem from an incident in July 2017 when he shot his wife multiple times at their home in Theresa, and then shot and killed Trooper Joel Davis when he responded to the scene and was approaching the home.
Jury deliberations began Tuesday and went late into the day after listening to days of testimony. Family and friends of Trooper Davis and Nicole Walters were emotional as the jury announced their verdict. Walters showed no signs of emotion.
During the trial, Walters' defense claimed that he was suffering from PTSD and was not in his right frame of mind when he opened fire during the domestic dispute.
Prosecutors said there is no evidence that PTSD led to the crime.
They added that his wife was shot 13 times in an attempt to torture her. Trooper Davis was shot through the heart when he arrived to investigate.
Walters was also found guilty of attempted murder for the shooting of Rebecca Finkle and two children who were inside the shed while he sot aimlessly.
Walters will be sentenced on April 17th.
