Ithaca College students say they're saddened, hurt, and are still trying to understand allegations levied against college chaplain Rev. Carsten Martensen, who stands accused of sexually assaulting a minor in the 1970s.
Faculty members, college leaders, and community members also on Tuesday came to the Muller Chapel to do some reflection. They discussed how to process news like this, resources that are available, and how the campus is working help people moving forward.
Pastor Debbie Bennett-Reynolds of the First Baptist Church said that services like this are important and that healing from this will takes time.
“It makes me really sad and I think there’s been a lot of hurt,” said Bennett-Reynolds. “As a clergy person, I think a lot of this stuff that has been coming out over the last few years is a reminder to us all that clergy are human and broken just as much as anybody else is.”
Inside the chapel on Thursday at 6 p.m., there will be another community gathering to help the people process the news.
Martensen has stepped down from his position until the investigation is complete.
