County Executive Ryan McMahon sees the future of Onondaga County as hopeful.
"There is real momentum in our county," said County Executive McMahon.
In Tuesday night's State of the County Address, McMahon laid out a plan to tackle countywide poverty- urban and rural.
"A $2.2 million annual investment will move Syracuse into the front rakes of our information-based economy and simultaneously help eliminate chronic and concentrated poverty while creating a $1.8 billion impact over ten years," said McMahon.
He says to end poverty, the county needs to become a competitive area for technology investors like Amazon. McMahon says education is the key.
"We have a generational opportunity to be a partner with the City of Syracuse with the Syracuse city school district, OCM Boces and New York State in a county wide STEAM school," said McMahon.
The downtown Syracuse campus would offer technical training to students across the county living in urban and rural areas.
"From the tech garden expansion to the regional wide STEAM school, we have some really cool projects and we have the county support which we really appreciate," said Syracuse Mayor Ben Walsh.
Part of the Syracuse Surge Initiative, the school is in its early stages-- the county legislature is working to make the school a countywide purpose.
"There's still legwork to go on that but I think that's a real generational opportunity for us and we've got to get the job done," said McMahon.
