Protesters across the region are speaking out against President Donald Trump's declaration of a national emergency.

The president made the announcement Friday in an effort to get funding for his border wall.

A demonstration was held in Syracuse on Monday. It stems from what protesters are claiming is a "fake" emergency.

The president is calling the situation at the border a national security and humanitarian crisis.

This all comes after President Trump recently signed a new funding bill avoiding a second government shutdown. However, that bill didn't contain all the funding Trump wants for a border wall, so he's completely bypassing Congress with this national emergency.

That declaration comes with quite a bit of controversy.

"This is a manufactured emergency that Trump by limiting the asylum in this country is actually creating the problem at the border," said Maureen Kissane, who was out protesting on Monday.

Critics say it's an abuse of power and unconstitutional and protesters want to talk about what they believe are real emergencies for the country. They say things like poverty, homelessness, and the separation of families through immigration should be addressed first.

Protesters are also calling on Representative John Katko to curb Trump's order.

"It's just another erosion of our democracy and he's trying to grab executive power and it's very scary. It's the making of a dictatorship," said Kissane

The president is hoping to secure $8 billion in funding through the national emergency declaration.
