Taxes could be going down for the city of Utica.

Mayor Robert Palmieri outlined his budget proposal on Monday, which includes a 2 percent tax decrease.

The total dollar amount is $71.8 million, down by almost $1 million from last year.

Mayor Palmieri says that half of the budget will go to the police and fire departments and the rest will be used for the DPW and other expenses in the city.

His focus on the tax cut comes after the sale of two properties.

“It's a wind fall. We sold the marina and 1900 Bleeker Street. They were not expected but they came to fruition at this point,” Palmieri said.

The mayor is also saying the city will see new lighting and improvements along Harbor Point.
