Many people across the state enjoyed the Monday’s sunshine; along many creeks it made things easier for crews clearing ice jams - trying to prevent flooding.
In Oneida County in particular officials have been on high alert watching the Sauquoit Creek.
Crews spent Monday operating equipment to pull ice chunks out of the water.
"If we hadn't been on top of it this ice jam would have caused this creek bed to overflow hours ago,” said Bob Friedlander, Mayor of Whitesboro.
Throughout the day crews were working nonstop to make sure no flooding affected homeowners. On Monday, around 8:00 p.m. enough ice was removed from the creek to make the flow of water move into the Mohawk River. One resident spoke to us and was happy the state was being proactive.
"It definitely would be flooded because it would be going over the banks right now,” said Vincent Malagese, a Whitesboro resident. “I am glad our local officials are staying ahead of the game.”
As of now, no homeowners have been affected.
