It may not seem like a matter to worry about but shoveling a driveway or sidewalk can lead to some serious health risk.

It’s a more strenuous activity than many realize and can present dangers people wouldn’t think about as they bundle up to go outside in this weekend’s bitter cold temperatures.

Some advice on safe shoveling:

  • Don’t immediately pick up a shovel and aim for the biggest pile. Ease into it – back and other muscles might not be used to picking up heavy things like snow.
  • At any sign of pain or shortness of breath, take a break. It could be an indication of over-exertion.
  • Pain coupled with being lightheaded, short of breath and having chest pains? Go straight to the ER. It could be an early sign of a heart attack.

The American Heart Association also says that shoveling snow may not lead to any health problems, but it’s important to know how this type of weather can affect the heart.

Other tips include taking breaks, learning the warning signs for heart attacks and pay attention to any unusual pain.

If needed, call a neighbor for help.
