When a person tries to effect justice, based on what they think is right or wrong, they are a vigilante.

"You know these kind of organizations that can be a part of this, it can be dangerous. Generally the work product is unreliable and unusable, so we really have to do our own investigation anyways," said Sr. Assistant District Attorney Jeremy Cali.

Found on YouTube page Parents Against Predators Nationwide, this video allegedly shows 36-year-old Robert Loth at an area Dunkin'. He was allegedly there to meet a 15-year-old girl he thought he was sending text messages to. That "girl" proved to be members from the online organization.

The men then posted the video online and the Syracuse Abused Person's Unit got involved.

"We're certainly grateful that we're going to pursue charges. We had to get our own independent evidence to do that; we couldn't do it with what this particular organization had," said Cali.

Vigilantism has an aged role in American history. Some recognize vigilante justice as a risk for violence, as the victim of the vigilantism can seek payback and try to take the law in their own hands.

A Syracuse Police Department spokesperson says though the department encourages citizens to communicate with police, the vigilante concept is discouraged.
