Lyle Thompson, a star lacrosse player who hails from Central New York and set collegiate records at UAlbany, was surprised by what he heard during a National Lacrosse League game this weekend in Philadelphia.
Thompson, who was the league's MVP last year, is from the Onondaga Indian Nation.
Both the public address announcer and Philadelphia Wings have since issued public apologies, with the announcer saying on social media that his words were poorly chosen and "not intended as racially motivated."
The NLL is promising swift action.
