It's that time of year again as gyms across the country are expected to see an increase of members hitting the floors this month.

"We're definitely having an influx of people coming in,” said Watertown Planet Fitness General Manager Alyssa McKenzie-Cherry, "from first time gym users to people re-committing to their goals. It's a mix of people, which is great."

The increase in gym members is common for this time of year because many people are ambitiously working towards their new year's resolutions.

"Whatever their new year resolution is, whether lose weight or just start a healthy lifestyle or just get out of their house,” said Upstate Planet Fitness President of Operations John Hrinda, "we are here to welcome everyone."

Local gyms may be packed for the next few weeks, but team members say it won't stay this way all year. People typically bail out on those gym memberships come mid-April.

"Usually, it does tend to slow down like early spring,” said McKenzie-Cherry. “Especially when you start to have the nicer weather, people will do exercises outside."

For those who may not keep up at the gym, fitness experts say there are other ways to stay healthy.

"We recommend like a healthy diet, taking a look at what your calorie intake is, drinking water, staying hydrated," said McKenzie-Cherry.
