A judge has formally approved the settlement in a class-action lawsuit against a Syracuse nursing home.

Patients and families of those at the former James Square home sued over poor conditions. The facility has a new owner and was renamed Bishop Health.

They've agreed to pay nearly $500,000 to settle the suit. The Onondaga County Supreme Court judge who approved the settlement says the money will be distributed to plaintiffs based on their length of stay and the treatment they received.

As part of the settlement, Bishop Health agreed to hire more employees and meet quality benchmarks. A suit against the facility's previous owners is still in progress.
