It's been a year of growth in Central New York, with thousands of jobs added to the private sector.

"Very good market right now for workers entering the job market,” said CNY Labor Market Analyst Karen Knapik-Scalzo. “I think it is a very strong labor market for people to look for a job right now."

The Department of Labor estimates that 3,600 jobs were added to the private sector over the past year, the biggest growth in jobs Syracuse has seen in a decade. Those in demand are engineering, health care, and customer service.

But with so many jobs, a labor shortage could come.

“We are starting to hear from some employers that they are having trouble filing their job openings,” said Knapik-Scalzo. “We're starting to see that issue of labor shortages in our job market, so that's definitely a concern of local employers."

Experts say the reason these jobs aren't getting filled has to do with a stagnant population and baby boomers retiring. But, some say it's because employers aren't able to reach job seekers outside Central New York.

"Our big problem in Upstate may not be the lack of jobs or opportunities but a mismatch of the geographic density and the availability of that information getting from the job poster to the applicant," said Upstate Venture Connect co-founder Nasir Ali.
