Snow blanketed some parts of our region Tuesday, but Wednesday it could be worse.
With lake effect snow in the forecast, county and city officials are bracing for whatever comes our way. All year long, Syracuse leaders have been working to come up with ways to make snow clearance easier — particularly for sidewalks.
Mayor Ben Walsh announced a pilot program just a few months ago. The plan is to hire outside contractors to help clear sidewalks along 20 miles of road.
But, the program won't be ready in time for Wednesday's snowfall. However, Walsh is hoping to roll that program out by the beginning of December.
In the meantime, the city has implemented a new strategy.
"We have new GPS units on all of our vehicles, our fleet, so not only will we in City hall be able to track where our plows are, but the community will as well. Instead of calling City Hall and asking why the plow hasn't been on your street, you'll be able to get on the website and see where they are, see where they've been. In doing so, makes the whole process much more transparent," said Walsh.
On the county level, County Executive Ryan McMahon has already met with Emergency Services and the DOT commissioner.
He's said they are watching the forecast closely and are prepared for however many inches slams our way.
