DEWITT, N.Y. -- As the two men shot and killed inside a DeWitt Chili's are mourned, thousands of dollars was raised for the surviving family members of one victim, the manager.
Family members identified the victims as Steve Gudknecht and Kris Hicks. Both were fatally shot – "they were executed" – while leaving the Erie Boulevard East restaurant at closing time. Two other employees survived, the district attorney said, because the gun jammed.
An online fundraiser for Gudknecht page topped its $10,000 goal. Creator Bryan Ruff said Chili's has offered to pay for Gudknecht's funeral. Gudknecht worked as kitchen manager.
"He was looking at maybe another promotion to a general manager position, he was just about to have his 38th birthday in a couple weeks, his daughter just passed her birthday, just turned 14," Ruff said. "The timing couldn't have been worse. It seemed like he worked so hard to get here, I have to wonder, why?"
William Wood Jr., 32, is charged with two counts of first-degree murder and one count of robbery.
