Last of the parades, crazy foods and huge crowds: this year’s Great New York State Fair has reached its end.

“We’re on the 13th day. We had a good run at it. We’re looking at an all-time attendance record sometime today, crushing through that,” said Troy Waffner, acting NYSF director.

This is one of nine records broken despite two days of extreme heat and a storm.

“We broke the single day all-time attendance record and then we broke multiple daily attendance — we’ve had probably five days with over 100,000 in attendance, or close to 100,000 in attendance,” said Waffner.

But larger crowds can sometimes draw in other problems.

Following Sunday night’s Chevy Court concert, a 17-year-old was stabbed after multiple fights broke out on the Fairgrounds.

“We had extra staffing on-hand, but there were some unruly people. Some of them did get into fights and disturbances. We broke them up and sent them on their way. At the end of the day, we ended up arresting three individuals…We beefed up security for this year from last year knowing that this fair is growing and becoming more popular,” said Maj. Philip Rougeux, NYSP troop commander.

It’s a precaution to keep fair-goers safe.

“For the most part, this is a very safe place to be. We have more troopers here per person than probably anywhere else in the state right now,” said Rougeux.

Aside from the altercations, there was one other challenge organizers faced: Parking.

“Parking is one of those issues we have to continue to address. We added 2,000-plus more parking spots in the Orange Lot this year. There were some traffic slowdowns, but we got people into the Orange Lot. We got people into the rest of our lots,” said Waffner.

Making for an overall success.

“Vendors are happy. Fair-goers are happy. Now we begin planning the 350 days or whatever to do this again,” said Waffner.

And looking forward to the next year.
