One of the biggest turnouts at the Fairgrounds each year is the Labor Day parade.

Workers from across the state gathered and marched through the grounds to Chevy Court Monday.

Many of the major unions were represented.

They say it's important to remember the true meaning of Labor Day.

"The real issue for us is to remind people that it's not a day just to buy clothes or go out and sell things. It's a day to remember those people that worked hard, that got you your benefits and got you your rights. Rights like social security, the weekend, rights like Family Medical Leave. All the things that people take for granted today had to be fought for over the years," said Danny Donohue, Civil Service Employees Association president.

The first observance of Labor Day, according to the Census Bureau, was in 1882.
