GEDDES, N.Y. -- Vegan restaurant Strong Hearts Cafe is offering up their own version of the iconic Italian sausage sandwich enjoyed by thousands of fairgoers every year.

The owner created a soy-free, gluten-free sausage made out of pea protein. It's topped with peppers and onions and wrapped in pretzel roll.

He says it tastes and looks like the regular sausage sandwich. It just has lower fat and no cholesterol that satisfies vegans.

“Vegans want that kind of stuff. Vegans want to indulge. It's not the kind of stuff you would eat every day, but they want to be able to come to the NYS fair and have a decadent, over-the-top food,” said Joel Capolongo, the Strong Hearts Cafe co-owner.

Strong Hearts Cafe also has their own version of a Heart Attack burger only sold on Wednesdays. It's a grilled veggie burger with lettuce and tomato stuffed between two glazed donuts.
