Members from across the state are in Liverpool for the 146th annual New York State Firefighter's Convention.

Their Youth Day Friday gave 50 junior firefighters a chance to learn about the job hands-on, with hoseline advancements and rescue drills.

Some of the trainees are right from Syracuse, Baldwinsville and Solvay.

Organizers say recruiting is tough for volunteer departments.  They hope this ignites interest in the next generation.

"I think helping the community, being part of something where you live is the most important," said Bruce Mack , a FASNY public relations member. "A lot of people just expect when you call 911 somebody is going to show up, and we need somebody to show up."

Firefighters will host a panel discussion looking at the issues they face Saturday.

The convention ends Sunday.
