PAINTED POST, N.Y. — There are still several unanswered questions in the investigation of a state trooper killed in the line of duty Monday.

Trooper Nicholas Clark, 29, was shot while responding to a call in the town of Erwin. But the circumstances surrounding his death are still unknown.

At this point, state police are working with the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office and the district attorney to piece together any more information they can gather. It can take weeks until the investigation is complete.

Troop A, C and D are all in Painted Post, either helping in the investigation or filling any gaps in other areas. Up to 70 officers will be working around the clock.

The incident started at around 3:30 a.m. Monday when police responded to Welch Road.

Steven Kiley, 43, had barricaded himself inside and wasn’t responding to police. That’s when Trooper Clark was shot and killed by Kiley, who was also later found dead from an apparent gunshot wound.

Troop E Public Information Officer Mark O'Donnell says troopers have left summer vacations with families to provide any help they can in this investigation.

“Although they were away as far as the Adirondacks and other places around the state, out of state have come back. We’re a family so when something like this happens we try to do the best we can for the trooper and his family,” O’Donnell said.
