Lawrence Maturo was riding his bike home home from Planet Fitness around 6:30 Monday morning. Police say he was off on the shoulder on West Taft Road when he was hit from behind by a vehicle.

But the driver responsible was nowhere to be found. Maturo was rushed to a local hospital, where he died a few hours later.

Police closed a portion of West Taft for most of the day Monday to investigate. Video from multiple sources, including dashcam and surveillance, may help find the driver responsible.

State police said in a statement that they are seeking 33-year-old Vontelle M. Sparks of Liverpool for questioning in the investigation.

Police tell Spectrum News the vehicle involved -- later identified as a 2011 Kia Sportage -- was located around 4 p.m. Monday on Carbon Street. Police were tipped off to the suspect vehicle, according to a press release, by a cab driver who contacted the NYSP.

Authorities say Maturo was only about two-tenths of a mile from his home on Hazelhurst Avenue when he was hit.
