SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- A Syracuse arena dedicated to veterans is getting a major facelift this summer.
The War Memorial on State Street was built in 1949 and continues to serve as the home of the Syracuse Crunch.
The arena has hosted major events including performances by Frank Sinatra, Billy Joel, and Elvis Presley.
Onondaga County legislators recently approved an $8.5 million project that includes upgrades to restrooms, concessions, and corridors.
New VIP suites along with a new scoreboard will also enhance the guest experience.
"The beauty of what's happening, or what will be completed, is that, you're going to maintain the old school, old barn atmosphere, but you're going to have all the modern amenities. So, I think it's a win win," said Syracuse Crunch Owner Howard Dolgon.
The bulk of construction will get underway next month with a goal for completion in October.
