COOPERSTOWN, N.Y. -- A historic baseball field in Cooperstown is expected to undergo a multi-million dollar renovation. But first, local leaders say they have to raise the money.
On Monday, State Senator James Seward announced he's secured a $1 million state grant to help renovate Doubleday Field. The entire project is estimated to cost nearly $6 million.
Renovations include improvements to the bleachers, field, entrance and parking lot. Officials say they'll also create a space for a museum and a multi-purpose building.
"It's crucial that we do it. Every year that you delay is another year that things get worse. The timing's good, the timing in advance of the 100th anniversary and what we expect to be the biggest induction ever of Derek Jeter in 2020, all the timing is working out well," said Jeff Katz, the president of Friends of Doubleday.
Village officials say they plan on funding this project with additional grants and private donations. If those funds can be secured quickly, they hope to start construction next year.
