VERONA, N.Y. -- One person was killed and four more taken to the hospital, following a crash on the Thruway in Verona Thursday morning.

State police say a car broke down on the westbound side of the highway around 2:30 a.m.

They were pulled over just past Exit 33, and one of the four occupants was outside the vehicle attempting to make mechanical repairs, when a freightliner box truck drifted off the highway and struck the vehicle in the back.

Arthur Hunter, 26, was killed in the crash.  His three passengers all had minor injuries, but were hospitalized in Syracuse.

The other driver was also hospitalized, but he's being ticketed for a traffic violation.

State police say Hunter's vehicle had its hazard lights on at the time – it's not clear what caused the other driver to drift off the road, but they are continuing to investigate.
