BUFFALO, N.Y. — UB student Kevin Guichard, 19, was taken to ECMC in critical condition Wednesday after he was hit by a Buffalo Police Detective on her way to work.

Captain Jeff Rinaldo said the detective, a 40-year veteran, is cooperating with the investigation and volunteered to take a blood test. He said she was shaken up by the incident.

Rinaldo said the department will be reviewing surveillance camera footage as part of the investigation but asks anyone with information to call the police at 716-851-4444.

This is the third time this year a member of the Buffalo Police Department has been involved in an accident in which a pedestrian was struck. In March, a woman was killed after an officer hit her with his car while responding to a call. Tuesday night, an officer on patrol hit a child on Oneida Street. The boy was taken to Oishei Children's Hospital for non-life threatening injuries.

As the investigations continue, University District Common Council Member Rasheed Wyatt says he is actively working to make Main Street safer for pedestrians.

Wyatt points to the lack of signs marking crosswalks. He's also been pushing to get more stop lines in front of them. Wyatt says he’s meeting with the city engineer to find a solution.

"We encourage people to utilize the crosswalk," Wyatt said. "If they're not marked, please notify my office. We've gone through the entire area and looked to make sure we have those markings so people can see those markings as well as those stop lines. We want to make sure cars are not parking, stopping in pedestrian walkways."
