SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Van Duyn Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing was once owned by Onondaga County, but is now privately run. According to its website, the facility has 513 beds. Over the weekend, Annette Walker, a resident who occupies one of those beds, went live on Facebook to highlight the conditions she and others are enduring.
"It is freezing cold in Van Duyn. It's a shame when y'all got people walking around with coats and gloves, including the employees," said Walker, who has lived at Van Duyn for two years.
Walker said over the phone that the temperature inside the facility has been an issue since the start of winter. It's something she says she has brought to the attention of a number of staff members at Van Duyn.
"I told the supervisor for our floor,” Walker explained. “We told the social worker. They all said they would check into it. They're working on it."
"Sunday after church, I went over there, and I was dismayed by what I found. I found what I would say is a neglectful situation," said Pastor Daren Jaime, People's AME Zion Church.
Jaime is Walker's pastor. He said after seeing her video, he had to visit Van Duyn for himself.
"I walked in and I didn't have a jacket on,” Jaime added, “I wanted to get the feel like the residents would have it, and even with a sweater on, I found the floor to be extremely cold.
"I talked to some of the people in the building who work in the building and all of them said, it's always cold on this particular floor."
Jaime also spoke out on social media and he plans to hold Van Duyn accountable. He said, "If that means going to the Attorney General, which we will do. We are looking at the attorney general, asking him to come in and have a full investigation."
According to the State Department of Health, regulations require residential health care facilities to maintain comfortable and safe temperature levels within their facilities.
The statement goes on to read:
"Ensuring the health and comfort of nursing home residents is of the utmost importance to the New York State Department of Health. We have been in regular communication with Van Duyn Center administration, regarding concerns related to the heating system. The Department will continue to closely monitor the situation."
As for Walker, she said, "I'm trying to get myself well enough to go home," and for those who can't, she says she hopes by speaking out something will finally be done.
Spectrum News has left messages to the administrator at Van Duyn. He has not returned our calls.
The State Department of Health says anyone who has a complaint or concern about nursing homes should call the Centralized Complaint Intake at 1 (888) 201-4563. All complaints are reviewed and kept confidential.
