Three homes have been destroyed after a fire began in Herkimer County on Wednesday.

The call of a reported explosion came in around 2:00 p.m. from the 300-block of West Main Street in the city of Little Falls.

Officials said three people were injured, two of those injuries are confirmed to be related to the incident.

The Herkimer County Sheriff told Spectrum News it is believed to have been caused by a natural gas explosion, but Little Falls Police said that is under investigation.

The Little Falls Police Chief said he’s never seen anything like this.

“The explosion was significant," said Chief Michael Masi. "It shuttered windows all over. You could see windows smashed out on houses up above. It always could have been a lot worse.”

Crews are checking gas at houses all along the street throughout the night.
