SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- A fire has displaced a family of seven on the Syracuse's Westside.

Firefighters spent nearly an hour battling smoke and flames at a building on Marcellus Street.

The chief says the bottom floor was vacant, and four people had to escape from apartments on the second floor and attic.

Everyone made it out safely, and firefighters were able to prevent the fire from spreading, despite numerous obstacles.

"We had a collapse. The conditions are pretty bad this morning. Just responding, getting here and dealing with the conditions and the cold this morning. Our companies did a great job,” said Syracuse Fire Chief Michael Monds.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

The Red Cross is assisting the displaced family members.
